:Question 1: How does the character search for solace, purpose, and/or redemption in this story?
In this story the main character, Eckels, is not looking for solace, purpose or redemption at the beginning of the story because he has done nothing wrong and is just in search of a good time. He wants to travel back into the past to hunt a t-rex because he is a hunter, but ends up making a horrible mistake. Eckels had to follow a few rules just to make sure that nothing in the future would change. The company had made many precautions to make sure nothing had happen including making a floating path so they wouldn't step on something. When they went back in time and saw the t-rex Eckels freaked out and the leader, Travis, told him to go back to the time machine. On his way back Eckels had stepped off the path onto some moss. This is when Eckels wants redemption because Travis found out that he had stepped off the path and Eckels's little mistake could have changed the whole future and it did. Travis wanted to kill Eckels for his mistake and Eckels begged for his life but Travis killed him.
Question 2: How does the character's experience reflect the historical period in which his/her story is told?
The character's experience reflect the historical period in which the story is told because of the time machine. The time machine is something that could be possible in the future. What I had noticed is that there was a dictator that was running for president. At this time there is no way a dictator could be president of the U.S. I was thinking maybe since a small mistake had changed the future in Eckels' case, well maybe some one had already gone to the past and changed the future like Eckels did and maybe made it so dictators are able to be elected as president. It takes place in the year 2055 and by that time there will be many differences so there may be many different changes. There might even be changes to the U.S. so there could be a dictator as president.
Question 3: How does the character's experience in the story symbolize the theme of survival and the human spirit?
The character's experience in this story symbolize the theme of survival and the human spirit because after every one had realized that Eckels had stepped off the path onto some moss he wanted to live and not be killed. Even the smallest thing could change the path like the people from the company had said. They had taken many precautions to make sure that nothing like this could happen but since it did Travis was really mad and wanted to kill Eckels for his terrible mistake. Travis shows the most of the theme of survival because he killed Eckels for destroying the future. Travis wanted everything to be the same and not different. When he came back to the future he had noticed many things were different such as the language and president. Travis was extremely mad about this so he had killed Eckels for his mistake.
